Kahnawake Fire Brigade – Measures to Combat COVID-19 in Effect

The Kahnawake Fire Brigade (KFB) wishes to inform the community that in light of recent events, Kahnawake has taken a proactive approach to limit any possible exposure to the COVID-19 Virus.
As one of the lead agencies responding within Kahnawake the KFB would like to remind the community:

–    The KFB cannot screen or test for the Covid-19 virus.
–    Ambulances are for emergencies
–    All patients wishing to be screened MUST call 1-877-644-4545 or 811
–    Please DO NOT go to the KFB
–    Please DO NOT go to Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre
–    Please DO NOT go to screening locations unless directed.

You must call Info-Santé at 811 first and speak with a nurse.  The nurse will then provide you with further information and where to go to be screened. If you proceed without first being screened, you will be turned away.
Should you feel you need an ambulance, please call the Peacekeepers at (450) 632-6505 and clearly state your symptoms.  As soon as proper resources are available, they will be sent to your location in a priority sequence.

Kahnawake schools, daycares, Youth Center and arena close as organizations address COVID-19

On behalf of the various organizations and services in the community, the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that all schools and daycares will be closed for at least the two weeks – similar to the situation throughout Quebec. The Kahnawà:ke Sports Complex and Kahnawà:ke Youth Center will also close immediately for the same period of time.

Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre has also taken measures to protect patients, staff and visitors. Of note, a screening process has been implemented for anyone entering the building.

A meeting was held earlier today, which included representatives from the MCK’s Public Safety Division, Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre, Peacekeepers, Fire Brigade, Step-by-Step and educational authorities to address the COVID-19 pandemic. Collective efforts are underway and will continue on an ongoing basis until the crisis subsides.

With the increase in persons being in self-isolation protocol due to travel or potential contact with COVID-19, it was decided at the meeting that those providing essential services will continue their work evaluating impacts on staffing to ensure their ability to provide necessary services.

“We are working collectively to put together contingency plans to deal with COVID-19 in the most effective ways possible,” said Commissioner of Public Safety Lloyd Phillips. “We are meeting on a daily basis and will make every effort possible to keep our population as safe and healthy as possible.”

“Along with the Kahnawake911 Facebook page, we will continue to use every means at our disposal to keep our people informed on the latest developments and how they impact Kahnawà:ke,” Phillips added. “It is extremely important that people don’t act on rumors or innuendo, so we ask that you tell your friends, family members and neighbors to use Kahnawake911 as much as possible.”

COVID-19 Screening Process at KMHC

The Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre would like to inform the community that effective immediately, the number of exterior entrances to the hospital will be reduced as part of the COVID-19 screening process put in place today, March 11, 2020.

As part of this precautionary measure, the exterior entrance to the pharmacy will be closed. This decision was made to protect our most vulnerable clients and our staff. To access the pharmacy, KMHC asks that clients use the main entrance of the hospital and follow the screening process with security.

All client traffic will be screened in the two existing entrances to KMHC. Clients not in distress but meeting criteria for screening will be instructed to go home with written documentation on self-isolation and to call Info-Santé 8-1-1. A log will be kept of these clients and a follow-up phone call will be made by our Infection Prevention and Control nurse.

For more information Services Québec has setup a hotline at 1 877 644-4545 for anyone that may have inquiries about COVID-19.

We still urge those who suspect they may have any symptoms such as cough, fever and/or breathing problems and any recent travel outside Canada in the last 14 days to dial Info Sante 811 to speak with a nurse. Info-Santé has many nurses on staff specifically for COVID-19. They will provide you with immediate information and directions.

KMHC appreciates your continued patience and understanding during this situation.

Coronavirus situation being monitored

The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) and the Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre (KMHC) would like to assure all Kahnawa’kehró:non that they are well aware of the situation regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and its affects globally. It should be made clear that there is currently no pandemic, and the situation is being monitored.

To avoid unnecessary stress, we are encouraging people to ensure they are getting their information from credible sources, such as the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Center for Disease Control, and other professional organizations.

“The risk to the average person is low,” states Commissioner of Public Safety, Lloyd Phillips. “Health care professionals are frustrated with the amount of false information on social media and with the 24-hour news cycle that makes the issue headline news every hour.”

As COVID-19 is a public health issue, the KMHC will take the lead if any Kahnawà:ke response is required, and Public Safety will support and partner when needed. Kahnawà:ke has a Pandemic Plan, and we have also identified key individuals who would be ready to assist in our efforts should the need arise.

KMHC and Public Safety will continue to monitor the situation through the Public Health Agency of Canada, the U.S. Center for Disease Control and the World Health Organization and will update the community as required.

As with any virus or infections, the community is encouraged to take usual precautions, such as hand washing and cough etiquette.

For any questions, please contact Public Safety at 450-632-0635 or email pubsafe@mck.ca.
