Directive 57.1 Extended Hours of Operation for certain local businesses

The Kahnawà:ke COVID-19 Task Force wishes to inform the community that Directive 57.1 Business operations to extend hours has been issued.

Effective today, Wednesday, March 17, 2021, local businesses that have been permitted to be open for business since February 1st, 2021, may now extend their operating hours until 9pm.

This is in an effort to support the healthcare establishments (overcrowding in hospitals), the overall impact of the pandemic (number of cases in the surrounding communities), and to not undermine or entice Quebecers from violating their curfew.

All establishments that sell tobacco products must also stop tobacco sales to non-locals at 9pm.

Businesses that must remain closed:

  • Restaurants (in house dining rooms)
  • Cigar lounges (in house rooms)
  • Bars and social clubs
  • Gaming establishments

The increased measures that were put in place have proven to slow the spread of the virus within the community. We are asking that the business community remain extra vigilant at ensuring that all health measures are strictly enforced. This includes the enhanced daily health checks of all employees, ensuring that employees stay home when they are sick and are tested when required, and masking, distance, and hygiene.

Directive 58 reminder – Cross Border Travelers

The  Kahnawà:ke COVID-19 Task Force (Task Force) wishes to remind the community of Directive 58.

This directive applies to anyone crossing the border for periods longer than 24 hours for work or educational purposes and returning to Kahnawake. You may be exempt from mandatory isolation provided that:

  • You have proof of a negative PCR test (lab test) results within the last 72 hours. (Rapid test results are not accepted)
  • If you receive weekly PCR tests and are negative, you may be exempt
  • If you do not have a negative test result or weekly screening you must isolate for 14 days.
  • There may be other limited work-related scenarios where an exemption may be provided

As previously stated, the Task Force recommends NOT to travel. The Kahnawà:ke Peacekeepers receive information from the Canada Border Services Agency to ensure follow-up on those re-entering Canada, as per normal protocols. It should be noted that non-compliance can result in penalties for offenders.

This directive was put in place as a means of protecting our most vulnerable population (elders and those with compromised immune systems) from COVID-19.

The Task Force wishes to thank the community for their cooperation in this urgent matter.

Dr. Gauthier receives kudos as she leaves Task Force

The Kahnawà:ke COVID-19 Task Force wishes to thank Dr. Annick Gauthier, MD, CM, PhD, BSc, CCFP, for her exemplary service to the community as she steps away from her duties as the Medical Advisor to the Task Force.

Dr. Gauthier informed the Task Force yesterday that she will be refocusing her energies to serving her clients. As many are aware, she is a family physician at the Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre (KMHC), as well as at the St. Mary’s Family Medicine Center.

She has been the Medical Advisor since March 2020.

“Dr. Gauthier has been a key part of our team,” said Lloyd Phillips, Head of the Task Force. “As a virologist, she provided the Task Force with top notch insight into the virus. She was hugely instrumental in providing our community with the most up-to-date and reliable information possible, which also had the positive effect of building trust in the difficult decisions that the Task Force had to make during the pandemic. We were very fortunate to have her on board.”

“Information and, specifically, science, is the most important tool in the battle against COVID-19,” added KMHC Executive Director Lisa Westaway. “Dr. Gauthier has helped give us the right tools we need to continue fighting this virus as a community. The entire Task Force appreciates her dedication, expertise and the obvious care she has shown for this community.”

“On behalf of the community, I’d like to say ‘Niawenhkó:wa’ to Dr, Gauthier for a job well done,” said Ratsénhaienhs Clinton Phillips, who is the alternate MCK Liaison to the Task Force. “Our community has managed to keep our numbers relatively low in comparison to other communities. She had an important role in keeping our vulnerable population safe.”

Information will be provided shortly regarding a replacement as Medical Advisor to the Task Force as we roll out the vaccination campaign and move into a new phase of the pandemic.
