Medium.com Article – Hold the Line

First, we are in the very infancy of this epidemic’s trajectory. That means even with these measures we will see cases and deaths continue to rise globally, nationally, and in our own communities in the coming weeks.

Jonathan Smith

Jonathan Smith is an infectious disease epidemiologist and in his article writes about  staying vigilant in our collective efforts to practice the measures we have set in place. He explains that although we may come to a point where social distancing does not seem to be working, and the virus seems to progress anyway as people die, we must continue to stick to our guns. Because the enemy we are facing is good at what it does, this does not mean our measures are not working.

This may lead some people to think that the social distancing measures are not working. They are. They may feel futile. They aren’t. You will feel discouraged. You should. This is normal in chaos. But this is normal epidemic trajectory. Stay calm. This enemy that we are facing is very good at what it does; we are not failing.

COVID-19 Task Force takes additional measures today

The
Kahnawà:ke COVID-19 Pandemic Task Force would like to advise the community that
it is taking certain additional measures regarding the current situation.

The
following measures are approved, effective immediately

  • Both
Kahnawa:ke pharmacies remain open, as essential services, but have initiated
new directives for clients to access services in order to keep the pharmacists and
health care workers at arm’s length from the COVID-19 virus. Information/
instructions are available at Covid-19.kmhc.ca site, or by calling the
    pharmacies directly.
  • Kahnawa’kehró:non
are STRONGLY urged to remain within the Territory, and to travel outside the
community only for food and medicine/medical needs. All non-essential travel
outside the community is strongly discouraged
  • Further
to the above, all tobacco factories and cigarette stores are directed to close
until further notice. This will help reduce the number of persons as well as
supplies entering the community, which puts our community at a high risk of the
    virus being transmitted
  • All
community gathering locations including churches, longhouses, reception halls,
and other such buildings/facilities are directed to be closed to the public

All
measures being taken are being put in place to help minimize the spread of the
virus within our community and to help those who are most vulnerable. Please
note: as we know, we cannot stop the virus from coming but, working as a
community, we can limit and manage its spread.

Please check Kahnawake911 for any updates.

CTV writer Daniel J. Rowe spoke with Lisa Westaway, Executive Director of Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre.

“Our structure is really well-organized so it allows us to function in the chaos,” said Westaway. “We’ve all said to each other, it’s when we get home and we just sit for five minutes that what we’re going through hits us, where you say, ‘Wow. How did we get through that day?”

KSCS Moves to Essential Services during COVID-19 Pandemic

In an effort to comply with the Kahnawake COVID-19 Task
Force Kahnawake Shakotiia’takehnhas Community Services (KSCS) are mandating all nonessential services staff to work from home.

All non-essential KSCS staff working from home are doing so to support the Essential Support Services and workers. In addition, all non-essential services staff can be called upon to help ensure other community Essential Services areas have the human resources needs met if required.

These measures will be in effect until the Kahnawake COVID-19 Task Force allows the organization to resume normal operations.

We want to reassure the community that accesses to essential services offered to the community is our highest priority during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lastly KSCS is working on putting into place a process that will allow community members access to food if they have limited or no access to a stable food supply. Once operationalized another notice will be sent to the community on how to access this.

Here is a list of the suspended activities and the what KSCS Essential Service will consist of:
